Designer Bio

Marita has been engaged in artistic practice since childhood and began developing her sewing skills at an early age. With a B.A. in ceramics from St. Olaf and years of experience working and experimenting in diverse media, she has cultivated a keen sensitivity to precision and clean finishes. At St. Olaf, her final ceramics series was a functional interpretation of the flow of fabrics solidified in clay. Just as with clay, all of Marita's artistic craftsmanship is marked by clarity, accuracy, and refined execution. While studying ceramics, she also costumed for the college's dance department, specifically with the international dance company. MCTC's Fashion Design Technologies’ (formerly Apparel Technologies) program has pushed Marita's sewing and design skills beyond what she could have ever imagined. As a seamstress, she has learned how to alter existing garments to suit the wearer's changing needs; as an artist, her work pushes basic clothing into refined, one-of-a-kind garments. Currently, Marita assists in maintaining vintage folk costumes and creating modern reproductions for the Ethnic Dance Theatre in St. Paul. Upon graduating, she hopes to continue designing as well as learning new techniques on mending and repair while entering the slow fashion world. She is excited for what is to come in her creative future with this new medium.
