James has been creating art of all kinds across many mediums since he was young, but has always returned to sewing. As a queer designer, James hopes to portray fashion as an expression of gender outside of a strict binary. After Minneapolis College, James hopes to go into costume design for theater.
My collection, “Resurrection,” is inspired by historical garments and construction methods, with an emphasis on hand-sewing techniques. I chose to disregard the historical categorization of garments as purely male or female, instead deliberately blurring the line between genders. From the Song Dynasty’s 100-pleat skirt to medieval Europe’s liripipe hood to American smocking, Resurrection blends historical trends with modern flare.
